Are TNCs good or bad?

It depends who you are. Some people are for TNCs, some people are against them.

TNC Project

Project Question 1: What is the impact of a given TNC on local and global populations?
Project Question 2: How can glocalization be used to create something of benefit to people?

Summative Assessement: Criterion A Knowing and Understanding, Criterion B Investigating , and Criterion D Communicating

We have learned about the impact of transnational corporations. Now it is up to you to choose a transnational corporation, research the company and then present your findings to the class. You will then create a plan to glocalize some product or service for your corporation.

Step 1: Choose a TNC to investigate

You must make sure that the company you are choosing really does operate Transnationally to a large extent.
List of TNCs

Step 2: Research questions (the answers of which, will be addressed in your talk)

  1. Where in the world is this TNC? Where does it operate?
  • Where does it buy, sell, manufacture, bank?
  • Where are the corporate headquarters?
  1. What does your TNC do/make?
  2. How much did your TNC make last year (earnings)? Are there any countries that did not make as much (GDP) as your TNC?
  3. How has your TNC branded itself? What are it’s customers supposed to think or feel when they think about the TNC? (Don’t just focus on a logo)
  4. Who is economically affected by your TNC? (consider both the local and the global communities)
  5. Who might be affected by your TNC in any other manner (i.e social, political)? (consider both the local and the global communities)
  6. To what extent is your TNC of benefit to most people? Why?

Step 3: Glocalization Plan

You have been hired by your TNC to create a plan to “glocalize” a product or service offered by your TNC. Since your TNC has expressed interest in expanding its market in an ethical manner and being a good “global citizen”, you need to take into account the impact on local people (i.e. culture, economics, etc). Your corporation is eager to work locally. Be creative!

Questions you might consider:

  • What will you try to glocalize?
  • Is there a local market for this or will you have to create a want?
  • Should a new product/service be created?
  • What are the local conditions that are important factors to consider?
  • In what ways will this glocalization be of value to the target market (i.e. economic, health, entertainment, etc)?

Step 4 After conducting your research and creating your Glocalization Plan, you are to create a Digital Presentation (use ppt, prezi, or any other format you like) with recorded audio. Record The requirements are:

  1. You may use the research questions above to guide your presentation.
  2. Your presentation should be five to seven minutes in length
  3. Limit the text on each slide (every slide need not have text-see TED examples below)
  4. Include a world map(s) indicating: where the TNC operates, the headquarters, where it sells its goods/services, where it produces its goods, and where it invests.
  5. Include a list of products/services your TNC makes
  6. Detail your glocalization plan
  7. An outline of your presentation, turned in before the presentation/talk including a bibliography/source list

A good Powerpoint/prezi presentation is more a well researched and rehearsed talk than a lot of text on slides. Slides should not have too many words. No paragraphs of text please. Slides should introduce, emphasize, or otherwise enhance (add) to your presentation/talk.

Here are some examples of a good talk:
A great deal of thought in a short talk. What is good about this presentation?

Note the use of color and font and general design in the slides

Post a good example here if you like. Yes, you the student can post something here. If you need help, just ask or send me a link via mail. Go Post.
